Most people going into a gym for the first time do it to look better
One aspect of that is fat loss
What most people don't realise is that weight loss is determined by the balance of calories in and calories out. Whilst being in a gym can help that, focussing on your diet will illicit the best results
If you can create a calorie deficit then you WILL lose bodyfat. You have to do this over a period of weeks to see and visible results.
One pound of bodyfat is equivalent to a weekly deficit on 3500 calories (500 calories a day over a week)
I suggest starting out by tracking your calories on an app like MYFITNESSPAL and monitoring your weight. From this you can determine your intake.

If you stick to your calories for a week, you can monitor any decreases or increases in weight and act accordingly
